We are the current empire! We have our hands in the cookie jar of the world.
"The U.S. global presence everywhere might be seen as an "informal empire,"similar to the ones that Europeans exercised in China and the Middle East during the nineteenth century" (Strayer, Pg. 1033). We are doing that now, we have our noses in all the World's business- our American government is always trying to get a cut of the pie- that world pie! "In all cases of dominant powers, they seek to use economical penetration, political pressure, and periodic military action to create societies and governments compatible with their values and interests, but without directly governing large populations for long periods" (Strayer, Pg. 1033). This brings me to today, we go over to other countries and set up shops, houses, communities, etc, etc. We take over their communities, land and resources without officially taking over.

Late post- June 26th -The 1st World-War.
World War I brought about a variety of inventions that changed the game of the World!
These inventions included tanks, submarines, airplanes, poison gas, as well bared wire. "This new military technology contributed to the staggering casualties of the war, including 10 million deaths, mostly men" (Strayer, Pg. 887). This and perhaps with the number of injured and crippled, the women of the day were left with little or no choice but to work. Men were being killed by the millions, "as a result, there would be no husbands or children" (Strayer Pg. 887).
This changed the World big time- at least for America, women were able to leave their legacy in history. "As the first World War ended, suffrage movements revived and women received the right to vote in a number of countries- Britain, the United States, Germany, the Soviet Union, Hungary, and Poland- in part perhaps because of the sacrifices they had made during the conflict" (Strayer, Pg. 888). Women earned their rights, World War I would not have been won without the scarifies of Women. This to me significantly changed society, at least the World saw, and finally recognized that they too are equal- WOMEN- and the right to vote shall be granted!
"One of the Biggest Steps In Mankind"- Women gaining the right to vote!

Late Post- JUNE 12th -Scientific Revolution
"Before the Scientific Revolution, educated Europeans held a view of the world that derived from Aristotle, perhaps the greatest of the ancient Greek philosophers, and from Ptolemy, a Greco-Egyptian mathematician and astronomer who lived in Alexandria during the second century C.E" (Strayer Pg. 667). The world's way of thinking was basically controlled for centuries- think like me or die was the way. The rich or upper-class controlled what was spread either about religion or factual ideas. The scientific revolution to me was a time when folks were daring to know, to think outside their boxes. Their had to be other ways of doing things?
"What is Enlightenment?" asked the prominent German intellectual Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). "It is man's emergence from self-imposed... inability to use one's own understanding without anther's guidance" (Strayer Pg. 671). To think with one's own mind- without the interruption of another man's input. This helped us grow tremendously as a society!

Late Post- JUNE 5th.
"By far the most important gift that China received from India was neither cotton nor sugar, but a religion, Buddhism" (Strayer Pg. 349). It had a tremendous effect on the people of China, this was very interesting to learn. "Buddhism was the ONLY -large scale cultural borrowing in Chinese history" (Strayer, Pg. 349). From their it just spread like wildfire, it went all over the East Asia lands via trade routes during the 1st and second centuries C.E.
This by far was the most interesting information in these chapters.

Late - May 22nd Blog entry.
The way of the Buddha was quite interesting in this chapter-(4). The information that "Buddhism derived from a single individual , Siddhartha Gautama" (Strayer, Pg. 183). This was something I never knew. He apparently was born in India, most likely in the sixth century B.C.E. "He was born of royalty- and at the age of 29 years old, he finally saw the outside World on his own- he discovered human suffering in the form of an elderly man, a sick person- and a corpse, all things he had never witnessed. He set out to to find a remedy- his act of severing ties to the attachments of ordinary life is known in Buddhist teaching as the Great Renunciation" (Strayer, Pg. 183). He found his true light, I too experienced this form of enlightenment, I was Confirmed here at N.D.N.U in my Catholic Faith.
Being enlightened or coming into one's religion helps an individual grow and overall inspire others.

Week of June 19th.
People were tired, the number of revolutions between the years of 1791-1804-The Haitian Revolution, the Spanish Revolution 1808-1825 were enormous. Most habitual lands had been conquered already. Slavery had a big part in the up-rising of people. That is the common denominator I see in these chapters.
In little more than a century, roughly from 1780 to 1890, a remarkable transformation occurred in human affairs as slavery, widely practiced and little condemned since at least the beginning of civilization, lost its legitimacy and was largely ended (Strayer/Nelson Pg. #715).
This is when the world truly started to change for the better of all. The laws had been in place for centuries that hurt the African people. It hurt my people as well here in the Americas.
The uprising of people throughout these last few centuries are significant an I give all praise to my ancestors who fought the fight for equality and fairness for all.
America has a long way to grow but is by far the greatest Nation on the Planet!

So, silk was that important? Interesting to learn that silk played such an important role in the commerce trade. Trade transformed the world with the invention of the silk routes. The Chinese people were also able to rise in class with the accumulation of wealth; land, property, resources. Trade also spread peoples ides from one part of the world to another. Although not as fast as we think today, trade spread people's ideas. Innovations were sent all over, and religion. Trade has enabled people from all around the globe to prosper, well, depending on who you ask.
Trade also played an important role in the destructive side of history. It spread disease which killed millions. It nearly wiped out the entire Native American population when the Europeans landed in the west searching for land, and riches. I get from these chapters that trade was an important part in the transformation of the world. It helped with the altering of the world. Who knows what the world would be like if individuals throughout history had not tried. Organized Trade created communication among us humans thereby altering the world, a great feat that was accomplished by mankind.

The WORLD Chpt.1/2
The world has been slowly evolving for for some 13.7 billion years, the rough estimated age of the universe (Eric W. Nelson, Robert W. Strayer). We are new; literally. It was interesting to read that for 3 billion years, life remained at the level of microscopic; or at a single-cell organism. This makes you wonder about all the diseases that are slowly migrating back into the world, the silent killers, the unknown micro-organisms still undiscovered. Will we ever find cures for certain diseases? It brings it all back to the three C's- Change, Comparison, Connections, all these things combined make up who we are today. We are all connected in some way or another. The history of the world has had many tremendous changes since its formation. Man has been seeking comparison from other men since the beginning of time. The connections are many, some good and bad, but in order to grow as human beings, man needed to evolve and it surely did. The possibilities of humankind growth are endless because of our abilities with technology, and our connection with others comparisons on a daily basis- the growth possibilities are ever changing and exciting.
